Wireless Extreme

A single AirPort Extreme Base Station allows up to 50 Macs and Windows PCs to connect wirelessly to each other and to the Internet.⁽¹⁾ And because it employs the 803.11g wireless standard, you never have to worry about compromised data rates — AirPort Extreme gives you blazing connectivity speeds up to 54 Megabits per second.⁽²⁾

Wireless Extension

AirPort Extreme allows you to easily extend the area of your wireless network when you need coverage beyond its standard 150-foot range. The AirPort Extreme Base Station features a range-extending antenna connector, to which you can connect an Apple-certified directional or omnidirectional antenna. The antenna expands the standard coverage area of your base station.

You can also extend the range of your network through wireless bridging. With wireless bridging, one AirPort Extreme Base Station communicates wirelessly with another AirPort Extreme Base Station that has a physical Internet connection to increase your wireless network area.⁽³⁾ No need to deal with the expense or inconvenience of additional cables.

Just for School and Business Campuses

The AirPort Extreme Base Station is available in a model designed especially for school and business campuses. Featuring support for Power over Ethernet, this model also conforms to UL 2043, the Underwriters Laboratories certification for devices that can be installed in air-handling spaces. With Power over Ethernet, the base station draws electrical power from the same ethernet cable that transports the data, eliminating the need to supply power separately to every base station and giving you freedom over the placement of your base stations. With its conformance to UL 2043, you can even place the base station above ceiling tiles, safe from unauthorised tampering.

Wireless Printer Sharing

Short on printers? Everyone in your house, office or classroom can share a single USB printer connected to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme Base Station. Or you can use AirPort Extreme to access an Ethernet printer connected to your office or school Ethernet network. Either way, you and everyone on your wireless network can print wirelessly.⁽⁴⁾

Phone Home

The PPP dial-in feature in AirPort Extreme allows you to make one very important wireless connection — to your own Macintosh at home. Thanks to the 56K V.90 modem in the AirPort Extreme Base Station, you can dial in your home network with your PowerBook when you’re at work or traveling. Need a document that’s on your Mac desktop at home? If your home computer is on, ready to share files and connected to the Internet using the AirPort Extreme Base Station and a broadband connection, you can access it as well as the other computers on your home network that are set up for file sharing.

Easy Setup

Setting up AirPort Extreme is virtually effortless. The AirPort Setup Assistant does most of the work for you, setting up your network, transferring the active Internet settings from your computer to the AirPort Extreme Base Station and configuring your computer to access the AirPort Extreme network created by the base station. Once you’’ve plugged in the base station and the middle status light glows white, launch the software and just follow the instructions on the screen.

AirPort Extreme supports Rendezvous, the zero-configuration technology built into Mac OS X. Using Rendezvous, AirPort Extreme automatically recognises the AirPort-ready computers in its range and links them together into a network.

Rest Easy — AirPort Extreme Is Secure

Whether you set up an AirPort Extreme network at home, at school or at the office, you want to be sure it’s safe from intruders. Don’t worry — AirPort Extreme has you covered. The AirPort Extreme Base Station comes equipped with a built-in firewall to help prevent unwanted access to sensitive data on your computer. It’s also certified for Wi-Fi Protected Access, which greatly increases over-the-air data protection and access control on wireless networks.⁽

AirPort Extreme Is Backward Compatible

You can use the AirPort Extreme Base Station with your 802.11b AirPort Card and still enjoy significant benefits. That’s because the AirPort Extreme Base Station features a Compatibility mode as its default setting. The Compatibility mode automatically supports not just the AirPort Extreme Card, but also the previous version of the AirPort Card and any other 802.11b-compliant product — Mac or Windows.

Compatibility mode enables both AirPort and AirPort Extreme-enabled computers to use an AirPort Extreme Base Station at the same time. The AirPort Extreme Base Station also features additional advantages, such as the 10/100Mbps WAN port that provides connectivity to DSL and cable modems; the external antenna connector for extending your wireless connectivity even further, beyond the 150-foot range of your built-in internal antennas (you can choose to connect either a directional or an omnidirectional antenna); and the USB connector for Mac OS X printer sharing.
